Thinking Machines bets on efficiency over size with its second model, Inkling Small

Thinking Machines, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, has released Inkling Small, an open-weights multimodal reasoning model.

It has 276 billion total parameters and 12 billion active parameters, with support for text, image, and speech inputs.

The model scores 40 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index, just below Inkling’s 41, but beats the larger model on some benchmarks.

Inkling Small uses fewer tokens per task and offers a 256K context window under an Apache 2.0 license.

Its weights are on Hugging Face, with browser-based fine-tuning available through Tinker Playground.
