With new plugins feature, OpenAI officially takes Codex beyond coding

OpenAI's Codex now supports plugins.

Plugins are bundles that can include prompts, app integrations, and MCP servers.

They aim to configure Codex for specific tasks in a replicable way across organizations.

Power users could previously add custom instructions or use MCP servers to achieve similar functionality.

The Codex app now has a Plugins section and a searchable library to integrate with external services (examples: GitHub, Gmail, Box, Cloudflare, Vercel); the feature is compared to Anthropic’s Claude Code and Google’s Gemini command line interface.
