New RCS standard could enable cross-platform video calls in native messaging apps

The GSMA released RCS Universal Profile 4.0, adding Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC).

MIVC aims to let users start or join video calls from native chat threads and keep call history tied to the conversation.

Universal Profile 4.0 also adds text formatting and higher-quality media sharing to RCS.

Widespread cross-platform use depends on Apple and Google deciding to implement MIVC on their platforms.
