SoftBank launches a gigawatt-scale “domestic battery” business, aiming to begin production in fiscal 2027 at the former Sharp Sakai factory site

SoftBank announced a new domestic battery business at the former Sharp Sakai plant site in Osaka.

The company will work with Korea’s COSMOS LAB and DeltaX to develop and manufacture zinc-halogen batteries using water-based electrolyte, plus high-density BESS.

The plan is designed to meet rising power demand from AI with batteries that are easier to source in Japan and have lower fire risk.

SoftBank aims to start production in fiscal 2027 and surpass 100 billion yen in sales by fiscal 2030, linking the project to its AI data center and energy infrastructure strategy.
