225-year-old Danish warship Dannebroge wreckage rediscovered in Copenhagen Harbor

Archaeologists from the Danish Viking Ship Museum have rediscovered the wreck of the Dannebroge in Copenhagen Harbor during surveys for a housing project.

The Dannebroge is a 225-year-old double-decker warship that exploded during the Battle of Copenhagen on April 2, 1801.

Researchers recovered artifacts including bottles, ceramics, basketry, two cannons and a human jawbone from the site.

This excavation is the first large-scale archaeological investigation of a wreck from the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen.
