Canada issues site-blocking order targeting even ‘future pirate sites’; blocking possible without a trial even if they evade it by changing domains

Canada’s Federal Court expanded a piracy blocking order to cover not only existing sites but also future sites using the same brands.

The order was requested by rights holders including Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., Rogers and TVA, and targets 13 piracy brands.

Rights holders can add new matching sites to the blocklist with an affidavit, as long as ISPs do not object, without returning to court.

The move speeds up responses to new domains and mirror sites, but raises fresh concerns about ISP neutrality and weaker judicial oversight.
