AI chatbots allowed to renew prescriptions without doctor visits in Utah pilot

Utah announced a one-year pilot letting an AI chatbot renew certain psychiatric prescriptions without a physician visit.

The service is run by Legion Health and is limited to 15 low-risk maintenance psychiatric drugs already prescribed.

Patients with recent medication changes or psychiatric hospitalization within a year are excluded and must receive in-person checks every 10 renewals or six months.

The program is scheduled to start in April 2026 and currently only offers a waitlist; it cannot issue new prescriptions or cover drugs needing medical monitoring.
