Danube's record low levels force shutdown of Hungary's only nuclear plant

Hungary shut down its only nuclear power plant after record-low Danube River levels limited cooling-water supply during a heatwave.

Hot weather made the river both warmer and shallower, leaving the reactor without enough cooling water.

The outage shows how drought and extreme heat can disrupt nuclear generation and threaten power reliability.

Similar river-temperature and low-flow constraints can force operational changes at other plants as well.
