Gasoline Prices in the US Cross $4, First Since August 2022

The US national average price for regular gas crossed $4 per gallon in early April 2026, the first time since August 2022.

Prices rose from about $2.98 before late February to roughly $4.06–$4.08, an increase of over $1 per gallon in about a month.

The spike was driven mainly by Iran-related disruptions to oil supply, including attacks affecting the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed crude toward $100+ per barrel.

Diesel rose about $1.70 and at least 13 states averaged $4 or more, while state-level prices still vary due to taxes and refining costs.
