Apple Fails Repairability Tests for Laptops and Smartphones

PIRG's 2026 'Failing the Fix' report found Apple ranked lowest for repairability in both laptops and smartphones.

The report analyzed 10 recent devices sold in France and graded Apple C-minus for laptops and D-minus for smartphones.

Apple received a 0.5-point penalty for supporting industry groups that opposed repair-rights legislation and lost marks for difficult physical disassembly.

Apple and Samsung lost points for limiting software update support to five years, and third-party Face ID repairs remain impossible.

PIRG also noted some positive moves, such as loosening parts pairing and adding repair-helper features, and gradual improvements in parts and tool access.
