Airplanes have round windows for a reason. Two plane crashes were needed to find out why

After two fatal 1954 crashes, engineers traced the problem to square windows concentrating stress at the corners.

Airplanes switched to oval windows to spread pressure more evenly in the pressurized cabin.

The design change improved safety and helped prevent fuselage cracks caused by structural stress concentrations.
