Wildlife tracking just got a massive upgrade, and it’s coming from space

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute are testing Icarus, a satellite-linked wildlife tracking network for spotting poaching threats in real time.

The system uses GPS and behavior data from tagged animals to detect panic patterns that may signal poachers nearby.

If successful, it could give rangers earlier alerts and better protect threatened species like rhinos and wild dogs across large reserves in Namibia and South Africa.
