Even in VR, “touch” is recreated: a new material whose hardness can be freely changed with light is on display at “NHK Tech Expo”

NHK’s Science & Technology Research Laboratories unveiled a haptic device at Giken Open 2026 that changes hardness with light.

The device uses a light-responsive polymer: blue light makes it softer, and turning the light off restores its firmness.

By combining the material with silicone rubber, the system aims to reproduce “softness,” which has been difficult to convey in VR and immersive media.

If developed further, it could broaden the range of tactile and texture expressions available in virtual experiences.
