Canada Introduces the Free Elections Act Aimed at Restricting Crypto Political Donations

Canada introduced Bill C-25, the Strong and Free Elections Act, to ban cryptocurrency donations to federal political actors.

The bill was tabled in the House of Commons on March 26, 2026 and would amend the Canada Elections Act to prohibit cryptoassets, money orders, and prepaid payment products as contributions.

Recipients must return, destroy, or convert prohibited contributions within 30 days and face fines up to twice the contribution value and statutory caps for individuals and corporations.
